Summary

For the first time, all five novels in the epic fantasy series that inspired HBO’s Game of Thrones are together in one boxed set。 An immersive entertainment experience unlike any other, A Song of Ice and Fire has earned George R。 R。 Martin—dubbed "the American Tolkien” by Time magazine—international acclaim and millions of loyal readers。 Now here is the entire monumental cycle:

A GAME OF THRONES
A CLASH OF KINGS
A STORM OF SWORDS
A FEAST FOR CROWS
A DANCE WITH DRAGONS

Winter is coming。 Such is the stern motto of House Stark, the northernmost of the fiefdoms that owe allegiance to King Robert Baratheon in far-off King’s Landing。 There Eddard Stark of Winterfell rules in Robert’s name。 There his family dwells in peace and comfort: his proud wife, Catelyn; his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow。 Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse—unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season。

Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances。 Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen’s brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister—the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind。 All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms。

Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki—whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys。

George R。R。 Martin, A Game of Thrones (London: Harper Voyager, 2011)。I assume you all know the ancient proverb, “Don't judge a book by it's …。。 TV series。”I've intentionally not watched TV series but preferred to dive into the literature world of Westeros。Brave, brutal, beautiful and beguiling。The epic story starts out in a difinitive locality before spreading out over many sprawling political and topographical landscapes (similar to how Tolkein began in Hobbiton before reaching to the ends of M George R。R。 Martin, A Game of Thrones (London: Harper Voyager, 2011)。I assume you all know the ancient proverb, “Don't judge a book by it's …。。 TV series。”I've intentionally not watched TV series but preferred to dive into the literature world of Westeros。Brave, brutal, beautiful and beguiling。The epic story starts out in a difinitive locality before spreading out over many sprawling political and topographical landscapes (similar to how Tolkein began in Hobbiton before reaching to the ends of Middle Earth)So many classy sub-quotes in this book:“I don't even know who my mother was,” Jon said。“Some woman, no doubt。 Most of them are。” (replied Tyrion) (p54)。 “。。。 the wild track … brought home the lesson that the map was one thing and the land quite another。” (p113) “Why do you read so much?”“My mind is my weapon。 My brother has his sword, King Robert has his war-hammer, and I have my mind, and a mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge。” - Tyrion Lannister (p118) “Can a man still be brave if he's afraid?”“That is the only time a man can be brave,” his father told him。 (p14, 157) “Why is it that when one man builds a wall, the next man immediately needs to know what's on the other side?” (p179) “Let them see that their words can cut you, and you'll never be free of the mockery。 If they want to give you a name, take it, make it your own。 Then they can't hurt you with it anymore。” (p179) “Her father used to say that a lord needed to eat with his men, if he hoped to keep them。 'Know the men who follow you,' she heard him tell Robb once, 'and let them know you。 Don't ask your men to die for a stranger。' At Winterfell, he always had an extra seat set at his own table, and every day a different man would be asked to join him。” (p211) “Let me tell you something about wolves, child。 When the snows fall and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives。 Summer is the time for squabbles。 In winter, we must protect one another, keep each other warm, share our strengths。 … You need her, as she needs you … and I need both of you, gods help me。” - Ned Stark to his daughter Arya (p216) “And I have a tender spot in my heart for cripples and bastards and broken things。” (p237) “Most men would rather deny a hard truth than face it。” (p121, 256)。 “The world was full of cravens who pretended to be heroes; it took a queer sort of courage to admit to cowardice as Samwell Tarly had。” (p256) “A warm rain was pelting down from a starless black sky as they walked … the (summer) rain had driven everyone under their roofs。 It beat down on Ned's head, warm as blood and relentless as old guilts。” (p367) “And Jaimie was even worse, rash and headstrong and quick to anger。 His brother never untied a not when he could slash it in two with his sword。” (p401) “Lords are gold and knights steel, but two links can't make a chain。 You also need silver and iron and lead, tin and copper and bronze and all the rest, and those are farmers and smiths and merchants and the like。 A chain needs all sorts of metals, and a land needs all sorts of people。” - Jon Snow (435) “She had been dreaming, she realized … trying to remember was like trying to catch the rain with her fingers。 The dream faded 。。。” (p460) “When you play the game of thrones, you win or die。 There is no middle ground。” - Cersei Lannister (p471)。 “A man who won't listen can't hear。” (p560) “。。。 only none of them seemed to recognise her。 Or if they did, they shied away as if she had the grey plague。 … Vainly, she searched for friendly faces。 Not one of them would meet her eyes。 It was as if she had become a ghost, dead before her time。” (p597) “There is no creature on earth half so terrifying as a truly just man。” Varys to Ned Stark regarding Cersei's fear。 (p612) “The Great Shepherd sent me to earth to heal his lambs, wherever I might find them。” - Mirri Maz Duur (p648) “The Great Shepherd guards the flock。” - Mirri Maz Duur (p650) “What grass the horses had left was heavy with dew, as if some passing god had scattered a bag of diamonds over the earth。” (p659) - - - - - George R。R。 Martin, A Clash of Kings (London: Harper Voyager, 2011)。An epic achievement by GRRM to create such a rich and exhaustive compilation of characters and backstories。Spoiler alert: I was gutted when Yoren got killed。“Crowns do queer things to the heads beneath them。” (p52)。 “There's no shame in fear, my father told me, what matters is how we face it。” (p87)“Was there ever a war where only one side bled?” (p107)“He was built like a keg, and had a similar capacity。” (p111)“If every captain was a king aboard his own ship, as was often said, it was small wonder they named the islands the land of ten thousand kings。 And when you have seen your kings shit over the rail and turn green in a storm, it was hard to bend the knee and pretend they were gods。” (p151)“When you tear out a man's tongue, you are not proving him a liar, you're only telling the world that you fear what he might say。” (p208)“The white horse and the black one wheeled like lovers at a harvest dance, the riders throwing steel in place of kisses。” (p。310)“War will make them old,” Catelyn said, “as it did us… I pity them。”“Because it will not last。。。 they are the knights of summer, and winter is coming。” (page 317)“He woke to the sight of his own breath misting in the cold morning air。 (He) reached to pull aside the cloak he'd hung over the rock, and found it stiff and frozen。 He crept beneath it and stood up in a forest turned to crystal。The pale pink light of dawn sparkled on branch and leaf and stone。 Every blade of grass was carved from emerald, every drip of water turned to diamond。 Flowers and mushrooms alike wore coats of glass。 Even the mud puddles had a bright brown sheen。 Through the shimmering greenery, the black tents of his brothers were encased in a fine glaze of ice。” (p。334)“The guards let him out a postern gate in the north wall, and they rode down Shadowblack Lane … past rows of shuttered windows and tall timber-and-stone buildings whose upper stories leaned out so far over the street they almost kissed。 The moon seemed to follow them as they went, playing peek-and-sneak among the chimneys。” (p408)“Perhaps that is the secret。 It is not what we do, so much as why we do it。” (p409)“Sleep is good … books are better。” (p。410)“Kings have no friends,” Stannis said bluntly, “only subjects and enemies。” (p430)To the Father she prayed for justice, the strength to seek it and the wisdom to know it。。。 “Show me the path I must walk, and do not let me stumble in the dark places that lie ahead。” (p452)When the wind blew, he could hear the creak and groan of branches older than he was。 A thousand leaves fluttered, and for a moment the forest seemed a deep green sea, storm-tossed and heaving, eternal and unknowable。 (p461)Cersei had managed to buy herself three hollow drums; they would make all the fierce booming sounds she required, but there was nothing inside。 It amused Tyrion no end。 (p533)If the fire was too hot, you could hardly keep the pudding from scorching by tossing a handful of raisins in the pot。 (p535)Stones and dung and fouler things whistled overhead。 “Feed us!” a woman shrieked。 “Bread!” boomed a man behind her。 “We want bread, bastard!” In a heartbeat, a thousand voices took up the chant。 King Joffrey and King Robb and King Stannis were forgotten, and King Bread ruled alone。 “Bread,” they clamored。 “Bread, bread!” (p537)He knew as much of ships and sails and shores as any man in the Seven Kingdoms, and had fought his share of desperate fights sword to sword on a wet deck。 But to this sort of battle he came a maiden, nervous and afraid。 Smugglers do not sound warhorns and raise banners。 When they smell danger, they raise sail and run before the wind。 (p742)- - - George R。R。 Martin, A Storm of Swords (London: Harper Voyager, 2011)。Part 1: Steel & SnowThe tension builds …“All these kings would do a deal better if they would put down their swords and listen to their mothers。” - Lady Olenna (aka, The Queen of Thorns) (p84)“It might have been minutes or it might have been hours; time slept when swords woke。” (p290)“A coin is as dangerous as a sword in the wrong hands。” - Tyrion Lannister (p264)“The tower stood upon an island, its twin reflected on the still blue waters。 When the wind blew, ripples moved across the surface of the lake, chasing one another like boys at play。” - A Storm of Swords (p545)Part 2: Blood & GoldI threw this book down in outrage and disgust after the Red Wedding。 8 months later I tentatively picked it up again。The closing chapters are gripping suspense。 No one does maximum drama like GRRM。“When they reached the top of the ridge and saw the river … “The rain was falling from a black iron sky, pricking the green and brown torrent with ten thousand swords。The tops of half a hundred trees poked up out the swirling waters, their limbs clutching for the sky like the arms of drowning men。” 78“The gatehouse towers emerged from the rain like ghosts, hazy grey apparitions that grew more solid the closer they rode。” (p99)Stannis looked at them with annoyance。 “Are you trained crows, to croak at me in turns? Enough。” (p155)Stannis looked at him, jaw clenched。 “Go,” the king said at last, “before you talk yourself back into the dungeon。”Sometimes the storm winds blow so strong a man has no choice but to furl his sails。 “Aye, Your Grace。” Davos bowed, but Stannis had seemingly forgotten him already。 (p157)His father always said that in battle a captain's lungs were as important as his sword arm。 'It does not matter how brave or brilliant a man is, if his commands cannot be heard,' Lord Eddard told his sons。 (p171)“Sometimes the short road is not the safest。” - Dalla。 (p444)Arya could taste the beginnings of panic in the back of her throat。 Fear cuts deeper than swords。 Fear cuts deeper … (p457)“It is hard to be so old,” he sighed as he settled onto the cushion。 “And harder still to be so blind。 I miss the sun。 And books。 I miss books most of all。” - Maester Aemon。 (p506)…George R。R。 Martin, A Feast for Crows (London: Harper Voyager, 2011)。 Originally published 2005。I think I liked this one the most。 After quitting the ASOIAF series after the Red Wedding event, I picked it up again a year later。 With minimal expectations I enjoyed the rich complexity and comprehensiveness of the characters。 Martin is a genius with a seemingly simple process of incarnationally encapsulating each unique character。 His knowledge of English and medieval history is evident。 Nobody writes prose like the GRRM!“Before he had lost his sight, the maester had loved books as much as Samwell Tarly did。 He understood the way that you could sometimes fall right into them, as if each page was a hole into another world。” (p72)Arya: “Slowly, her eyes adjusted。 The temple appeared much larger within than it had without。” (p108)“Archmaester Rigney once wrote that history is a wheel, for the nature of man is fundamentally unchanging。 What has happened before will perforce happen again, he said。” (p165)“How can you even think of not attending? This will be history, alive 。。。”“I prefer my history dead。 Dead history is writ in ink, the living sort in blood。” (p 166)Laws of Hospitality and Guest Right。“The Red Wedding was an affront to all the laws of gods and men, they say, and those who had a hand in it are damned。” (p246)“Once they eat our bread and salt they are our guests and cannot harm us。 The Freys had broken all the laws of hospitality when they'd murdered her lady mother and her brother at the Twins。。。” (p335)“Bread and salt … we broke bread。。。” “Guest right 。。。” (p632)“In the game of thrones, even the humblest pieces can have wills of their own。 Sometimes they refuse to make the moves you've planned for them。” (P335)DANCE WITH DRAGONSHere are some of my favourite parts of 'A Dance with Dragons, I: Dreams and Dust':“'Find Sam for me。 I will want to speak with him next。''He'll be down with the books。 My old septon used to say that books are dead men talking。 Dead men should keep quiet, is what I say。 No one wants to hear a dead man's yabber。' Dolorous Edd went off muttering of worms and spiders。” “'Lord Snow,' Maester Aemon called out, 'I left a book for you in my chambers。 The Jade Compendium。 It was written by the Volantene adventurer Colloquo Votar, who traveled to the east and visited all the lands of the Jade Sea。 There is a passage you may find of interest。 I've told Clydas to mark it for you。''I'll be sure to read it。' Maester Aemon wiped his nose。 'Knowledge is a weapon, Jon。 Arm yourself well before you ride forth to battle。'” “So much for vows。 Words are wind, and the wind from Manderly’s mouth means no more than the wind escaping out his bottom。” - Lord Godric“He let the insult wash right over him。 He had heard worse in his time。” - Tyrion“He looked about for his wine cup, but when he found it all the rum had spilled。 Drowning is bad enough, he reflected sourly, but drowning sad and sober, that's too cruel。In the end, they did not drown 。。。 though there were times when the prospect of a nice, peaceful drowning had a certain appeal。 The storm raged for the rest of that day and well into the night。 Wet winds howled around them and waves rose like the fists of drowned giants to smash down on their decks。”“Rain lashed at his face, blinding him。 His mouth was full of blood again。 The ship groaned and growled beneath him like a constipated fat man straining to shit。 …'Prophecy is like a half-trained mule,' he (Tyrion) complained to Jorah Mormont。 'It looks as though it might be useful, but the moment you trust in it, it kicks you in the head。'”…George R。R。 Martin , A Dance with Dragons 2: After the FeastContinues to be an epic series。 This volume slows down the narrative but still rich in character development and unexpected plot。 ****“Every touch a lie。 I have paid her so much false coin that she half thinks she's rich。”“Words are wind, and the wind that blows exiles across the narrow sea seldom blows them back。 。。。more

My 2 cents: The level of detail in sketching out a scene is next level, and grrm’s biggest strength imo is how he paints out the scene for you,it just shows that he has experience in film scripts and it feels like a movie that you are being shown, with not much left to imagination。Honestly speaking the text doesn’t feel like it was written by a very traditional prose author,it doesn’t have that much poetic feel to it that books like Lolita have, and I understand that the author was not striving for My 2 cents: The level of detail in sketching out a scene is next level, and grrm’s biggest strength imo is how he paints out the scene for you,it just shows that he has experience in film scripts and it feels like a movie that you are being shown, with not much left to imagination。Honestly speaking the text doesn’t feel like it was written by a very traditional prose author,it doesn’t have that much poetic feel to it that books like Lolita have, and I understand that the author was not striving for that and it would be impossible to do so anyway。The length is very considerable, and feels a cross between normal very edited novels and the rambling beauty of Stephen Kings style。 Very surprisingly for me,I feel like I could reread all of the stuff all over, and I rarely do that, and it would be rewarding。Part of the credit goes to the communities that follow the work so faithfully, but credit also to the author for creating layers of a very different variety than traditional smaller novels that I usually read。And the thing that annoys me a bit is the way many of these books end, they tend to be left on cliffhanger, which would be very appropriate for, again, visual media like tv shows, because you know they are going to continue with the next season in a short span of time。 But GRRM and his promised deadlines are just way too much and each individual book does not give that much closure to you。The author has wayyyyy too many characters and many are just mentioned here and there, and you really have to use your intuition and imagination to visualize each of them on your own,and to know which characters to ignore and which to not。The books imo are not worth much on their own individual basis, and a fair comparison would be Harry Potter。At its height, the popularity of that series was just about the same, maybe more。The demographic are different, but both are popular literature。If you remember, each book in that series showcases just one year of his life, and it provides a good structure to the story。There is not much going like that in asoiaf, and that’s an issue。The timelines can be confusing and although POVs are a novel way of writing,it does have its issues, you can struggle to know what happened when, and you have to go with it。As far as asoiaf is concerned grrm is definitely in his element, and the problems are just mere annoyances, thus my 4/5 rating 。。。more

Looking forward the Winds of Winter !

My favorite series of all time and some of my favorite books of all time。 The way the stories are told through different people made me want to keep reading。 The last two might be my favorite。 I love that the second to last is from the POV of a set of characters and the last is through another set but during the same time as the first set。 Love Jon Snow, Arya Stark, Davos, and Tyrion Lannister。

somewhat fitting that its storytelling has extraordinary and mediocre elements。 While this book does a lot more right than it does wrong, a handful of fundamental flaws stop it from being a 5 star series。 A Song of Ice and Fire, stands out from other fantasy series for its emphasis on politics。 While the fighting in the series main war is a big part of the books, the bulk of the story-especially in the Tryion, Ned, and Cersi viewpoint chapters-is devoted to strategizing and the struggles for power within each side of the war。 Much like real politics these struggles for power rarely involve clearly defined battles between good and evil, and instead feature nuanced figures and tough trade offs。 At first glance the conflict between the honorable Starks and kniving Lannisters may seem unbalanced, but as the story unfolds, you are exposed to different pieces of evidence and different perspectives, and begin to reconsider your original intuitions。 While some characters are lighter or darker shades of grey than others, pretty much every character has redeeming and negative traits。 Because of A Song of Ice and Fire's grandiose world, real world events often never have clearly defined causes which forces the reader to piece together different events to come up with their own explanation of events that is later proved wrong or left unsolved。 The complex political clashes in the series also make it unclear who, if anyone, is pulling the political strings。 The characters and character development in this book are both excellent。 Each character has a unique backstory, and while you may be disgusted by the actions of some characters you can at least see what factors made the characters the people who they are。 The characters in this book are also dynamic and undergo hardships that allow them to redeem or destroy themselves。 The interaction between different characters is great because a multiple POV chapter format allows you to see the same interactions and events from different angles。 Some major characters don’t have POV chapters which just adds to the story's complexity because you have to cope with the fact that you have an imperfect perspective on the events of the book。The lore in this book is also amazing。 The world just feels so lived in with different songs, religions, and historical works, that are sprinkled in throughout the main story。 It's very enjoyable to gradually learn about the history of Westeros as real time events unfold。 Learning the history of different political struggles and characters also changes your perspective on the events unfolding in real time。 I only have three complaints。 My first complaint is that the second book is rather uneventful compared to others。 The fact that there is very little fighting in the second book does not make it uneventful by definition, but aside from the end of the book, none of the political struggles in the second book seem to have any major significance on the later events of the series。 My second complaint is that the most recent two books are great but have terrible format。 In book 4 you get POV chapters for half of the main characters, and then you go back into time to see the POV chapter of the other characters。 What makes this series great is that events in different POV chapters don’t happen in a vacuum and have implications for other characters who barely even know each other。 But it's harder to keep track of world events when the chronology of the story is staggered between two books。 Reading books 4 and 5 close together nullifies this problem to an extent, but for readers like me who like to hop between series and books, it's a damn nuisance to have to read two 1000+ page books back to back。 This last complaint is more of a personal preference point, but I didn’t love the writing style of the book。 I get that when your writing a fantasy novel you have to give in depth descriptions to paint a picture that your readers have never seen before, but Martin’s descriptions can at times be excessive to the point where it becomes a chore to decipher the combined meaning of the different adjectives used in the descriptions。 The descriptions can also interrupt dialogue which can make entraining fast paced dialogue dull。 To quote Stannis Baratheon, “A good act does not wash out the bad, nor the bad the good。” Likewise the few negative aspects of the series, while worth acknowledging, don’t undermine the many more things this series does right。 。。。more

Best series I've ever read。 Far better than J R R Tolkien, Mercedes Lackey, C S Lewis, and all the other sci-fi and fantasy authors and books I've ever read。 The multiple povs (point of view characters) are amazing。 How can such a big burly man speak in such a way from Sansa Stark? Every character has their own type of colloquialisms and own way of thinking。 George is like an amazing actor who has put himself into the minds of all these different people and done a wonderful job of it。I was havin Best series I've ever read。 Far better than J R R Tolkien, Mercedes Lackey, C S Lewis, and all the other sci-fi and fantasy authors and books I've ever read。 The multiple povs (point of view characters) are amazing。 How can such a big burly man speak in such a way from Sansa Stark? Overall Martin does a good job world building, etc。 A very well written fantasy series。 Lots of shocking twist and turns。 My only complaint is that is is hard to keep all the characters straight。 So many pop up for a few chapters and then disappear, or pop up early in the story and then I forget about them, only to have them show up WAY down the line。 I don't want to have to take notes when I am reading for fun。 Overall Martin does a good job world building, etc。 A very well written fantasy series。 Lots of shocking twist and turns。 My only complaint is that is is hard to keep all the characters straight。 So many pop up for a few chapters and then disappear, or pop up early in the story and then I forget about them, only to have them show up WAY down the line。 I don't want to have to take notes when I am reading for fun。 。。。more

I still like Lord of the Rings betterIt’s really hard to build a bond or relationship with a character as they are killed off too frequently。 While the concept was good, I think the delivery in telling the story could’ve been better。

his sons Robb, Brandon, and Rickon; his daughters Sansa and Arya; and his bastard son, Jon Snow。 Far to the north, behind the towering Wall, lie savage Wildings and worse--unnatural things relegated to myth during the centuries-long summer, but proving all too real and all too deadly in the turning of the season。Yet a more immediate threat lurks to the south, where Jon Arryn, the Hand of the King, has died under mysterious circumstances。 Now Robert is riding north to Winterfell, bringing his queen, the lovely but cold Cersei, his son, the cruel, vainglorious Prince Joffrey, and the queen's brothers Jaime and Tyrion of the powerful and wealthy House Lannister--the first a swordsman without equal, the second a dwarf whose stunted stature belies a brilliant mind。 All are heading for Winterfell and a fateful encounter that will change the course of kingdoms。Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Prince Viserys, heir of the fallen House Targaryen, which once ruled all of Westeros, schemes to reclaim the throne with an army of barbarian Dothraki--whose loyalty he will purchase in the only coin left to him: his beautiful yet innocent sister, Daenerys。A Song of Ice and Fire, still unfinished by Martin, is frequently cited as one of the best fantasy series ever written。 And I agree。First of all, these books are incredibly complex。There are more than a hundred characters very important for the plot, and more than a thousand characters that are not ultra-important, but you will need to remember them nevertheless to follow all the side-plots along the way。Then there are 10 to more-than-20 chapter POVs per book, and most of them are happening at the same time which means you have to figure out the chronology of the plot yourself。Let's not forget Martin's prose, dry, grey, and focused on detail - something which only one reader in a hundred likes。But most people complain about the pace of the series - especially the last two books, A Feast for Crows, and A Dance with Dragons - and it can be very, very slow。Ruthlessly killing off characters when the plot demands it - never mind if it is some minor character no one cares about or (view spoiler)[Lord Sean Bean (lol) (hide spoiler)], Martin does it without looking back。The funny thing with A Song of Ice and Fire as a fantasy series is that there is very little fantasy in it。 Like, very, very little。 (view spoiler)[There are 3 dragons, some blood magic, a God of Fire (I can't really remember his name - was it R'hllor?), and zombies made of ice (others or just white walkers), and that is basically it。 Apart from that is just epic medieval-ish kings lords knights fiction (hide spoiler)]AND I LOVE IT。And now something you have all been looking forward to - books rankings!5。 A Dance with Dragons - 4。0 stars (the slowest of them all, with the least plot and weakest characterization - but hey, it is still a very fun and solid read - also, I would say that it has the best prologue and epilogue of all the other books in the series)4。 A Feast for Crows - 4。1 stars (most people absolutely despise this one because there is not Daenerys, Tyrion, and Jon Snow in it, but Dorne, Cersei, and Jaime were more than enough to make me happy)3。 A Game of Thrones - 4。1 stars (it is almost a tie between AFFC and AGOT, but unfortunately the first book of the series is still just a bit better than the fourth - Eddard and Sansa chapters and outstanding plot save it - Arya, Bran and Tyrion chapters were a bit excruciating to read at times, but Martin was still warming up。。。)2。 A Clash of Kings - 4。2 stars (the War of the Five Kings, part one of Arya's great journey, Daenerys in Qarth, total chaos in King's Landing, and Joffrey's madness conduct this book full of color, richness, and layers)1。 A Storm of Swords - 4。5 stars (this 1200-pages beast of a novel is definitely George R。R。 Martin's magnum opus - it is full of action, twists, extraordinary characterization, ingenious plot, and - practically everything one epic fantasy book needs!)That's it! DNFI've read way through this whole collection and stopped somewhere behind warriors on stilts and armies of chained slaves (kindle said something above 80%)。 Not that those did add much to the damage done already。。。Of all the characters, I liked Tyrion Lannister and Daenerys Targaryn。 Other characters I did not like from the start, or ceased to like over time。 (I enjoyed way too many of their deaths。) For the record: John Snow lasted very, very long。 Given how little screen-time my favs get com DNFI've read way through this whole collection and stopped somewhere behind warriors on stilts and armies of chained slaves (kindle said something above 80%)。 Not that those did add much to the damage done already。。。Of all the characters, I liked Tyrion Lannister and Daenerys Targaryn。 Other characters I did not like from the start, or ceased to like over time。 (I enjoyed way too many of their deaths。) For the record: John Snow lasted very, very long。 Given how little screen-time my favs get compared to all the other people, I finally, after years, decided to admit I'm not going to finish it。So far I have avoided every and any franchise of the series, including the TV-series。 I've seen how much effort they've put into designing the dragons, though, and my heart aches a little to not see more of them。 I know the series is popular upon Historian European Martial Artists, because it is so full of silly nonsense (academically called "Bullshido"), which adds to my experience from the books that the silliness of warfare outclassed even that of Warhammer, and the understanding of base tactics or melee combat was void。All in all, I can see how this conglomeration of intrigues, variety and bamboozle appeals to a large group of readers, however which I am no part of。 。。。more

One of the best pieces of fiction ever laid down on page -- and sadly, left unfinished。 I hope, like everyone else, that we will know what the book end of this story was supposed to be。

O~ Of course, great characters! (I couldn't find something for O, so sorry if I cheated ;) I loved and hated characters with such a passion, like they were real。 (Oh, no! They don't exist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) Some of my favorites are: Lady Nym Tyrion Lannister Edd Tollet Arya StarkTheon Greyjoy (but only in the last book)YgritteBrienneMelisandreJojen I~ I couldn't leave the books aside! I just wanted to read one more page and one more page! After I finished each book, I wanted to read the next one ASAP。A~ Amazing quotes! You know, I've got a notebook where I write all the quotes I love from books, and half of those quotes are now from ASOIAF。 Here are some I love: “Swift as a deer。 Quiet as a shadow。 Fear cuts deeper than swords。 Quick as a snake。 Calm as still water。”“Why is it that when one man builds a wall, the next man immediately needs to know what's on the other side?”“History is a wheel, for the nature of man is fundamentally unchanging。 What has happened before will perforce happen again。”“A day will come when you think yourself safe and happy, and suddenly your joy will turn to ashes in your mouth, and you'll know the debt is paid。”"Every hurt is a lesson, and every lesson makes you better。" F~ Feelings。 Those books made me cry, laugh, scream, yell, weep。 I got angry, mad, happy, sad。 My feelings were seriously a roller coaster。 。。。more

It was the first adult fantasy series I ever read。 I spent years asking my mom when I would be allowed to read it。 It was worth the wait。
